The One Simple Step to Creating Something New

Starting something new can feel overwhelming—but what if success came down to just one simple action? Here’s the key to turning your ideas into reality.

I can't tell you the number of times I'm sitting and staring at my blank screen, trying to figure out what I'm going to write—until I realize I need to start writing.

Anything. Literally anything.

There are many days where the first paragraph of a post begins with something like: "I don't know what I'm going to write today, but I want to write something, so here I am writing something. I wonder if I should talk about accountability or gratitude or maybe..." And then I get an idea, and I start rolling with it.

I go back and delete those introduction sentences—not sure anyone wants to read me muse about what my topic is. But the time difference to arrive at a topic when I'm actively writing versus when I keep it all in my mind is profound. It takes me less than thirty seconds when I start typing. It can be minutes/infinite time when I keep it all in my mind.

The act of creating/creativity (both notably share the same root) requires you to do the thing. It's far too easy to remain in your head with an idea, rolling it around. It's ethereal and hard to grasp. It's hard to figure out where it goes after the initial stage. But once you see/hear/feel it in the world—whether it's on a screen, or on a sheet of paper, or a sound on guitar—it begins to take shape. It gets so much easier.

It's like the well of creativity begins to help you because you took a courageous step. You chose to take something in your mind and turn it into something in the world. That's truly magic.

If you want to create something—a blog, a song, a company, a piece of art, whatever—start. Just start.

Don't think about it. Don't plan it more than you need.

Start.

I can't say it enough: by taking that first step, the second and third and fourth and beyond become that much easier. You go from a walk to a run, and it's so much fun.
